Food One question that every visitor asks themselves before visiting a foreign country is – What kind of food do they eat over there? While it might be a bit heavy for foreigners, Czechs are immensely proud of their cuisine – so don’t put it down unless you’re willing to put your dukes up. Czech meals usually start out with soup. Popular soups include potato, garlic, chicken noodle, sauerkraut, and dill soup made from sour milk. Main dishes usually consist of meat and some kind of side dish. Oh, and sauce – Czechs are big on sauce. And if you don’t get a big serving of red cabbage on the side of your dish, then it’s not an authentic Czech meal. As far as mains are concerned, beef goulash is a popular favorite, as is beef sirloin with cream and cranberries. Both are usually serviced with bread dumplings. Other popular side dishes include french fries, mashed potatoes, boiled potatoes, roasted potatoes, potato salad, and (rarely) rice. As you might notice, fresh vegetables are absent from the list – good luck. If you’re vegetarian, get used to the taste of fried cheese. It’s usually served with mayonnaise and french fries. All meals should naturally be accompanied by beer. Popular desserts include crepes, a delicious honey cake called Medovník, apple strudel, and blueberry dumplings.
