Hitchhiking Of course hitchhiking is never an advisable means of transportation in any country. Didn’t you see that movie The Hitcher? Although it might not happen often, each year in the Czech Republic a few hitchhikers are assaulted, raped, and even killed. Still, this doesn’t stop the Czechs from sticking out their thumbs and hitching rides. It is the cheapest way to travel, although drivers will expect some spare change for gas, most likely. Be forewarned, though, that if you’re a guy, chances are very slim that anyone will slow down for you. You’ll have much better luck if there’s a woman on board, although we certainly don’t advise any women to hitchhike alone in this country (despite the fact that a lot of young Czech women do.) Choose your spot wisely, or else the police will move you along. A much safer way is to go through a hitching agency. The Town to Town Agency, for example, brings travelers and drivers together. Check out their website at http://www.spolujizda.cz/, where you can browse dates and destinations on offer, or post an offer yourself. Or stop by their office at Narodni 9. They speak English, Czech, and German, and the fixed price is arranged in advance, so there will be no surprises when you’re on the road.
